Abstract

The anisotropic Janus particles possess better compatibilization effect because of its different chemical compartition. Herein, silica-based Janus nanosheets (JNSs) were synthesized by one-step method and used as the compatibilizer of poly (p-dioxanone)/poly (lactic acid) (PPDO/PLA) composites. Their asymmetric morphology and chemical composition were tested by SEM, EDS-mapping, XPS, FTIR, and TGA. The effects of JNSs on the compatibilization, viscoelasticity, and mechanical properties of PPDO/PLA composites were also investigated. The arched JNSs tightly hold PLA dispersed phase with chemical bonds on the inner surface accompanied with Van der Waals force on the outer surface. The synergistic effect of chemical bonds, concavo-convex fitted anchoring, and orientation leads to the simultaneous increase in the strength and toughness of PPDO/PLA/JNSs composites. The tensile strength and elongation at break of PPDO/PLA composites containing 0.05 phr of JNSs increased by 16.65% and 216.9%, respectively, compared to PPDO/PLA composites without JNSs.
