Abstract

The structure of (Et4N)4KAuAs4Te8 consists of two different cations and an AuAs4Te85- anion. The AuAs4Te85- anion can be considered in terms of two As2Te44- anions coordinating to a Au3+ cation to form a square-planar AuTe4 unit. However, molecular orbital calculations show that the Au cations of the square-planar AuTe4 units in (Et4N)4KAuAs4Te8 and other compounds are best described to be monovalent Au+. Electron-counting problems for the square-planar AuTe4 unit and its isostructural analogue TeTe4 unit are discussed.
