Abstract

A series of novel complexes of Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) based on pentadentate Schiff base 4-methyl-N-[2-[(E)-3-[3-[(E)-[2-(p-tolylsulfonylamino)phenyl]methyleneamino]propyl amino]propyliminomethyl]phenyl]benzenesulfonamide were synthesized by chemical and electrochemical methods. All compounds have been fully characterized by C, H, N elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1H NMR, UV–vis, and magnetochemical techniques. The local atomic structures of complexes were determined from analysis of EXAFS and XANES of Co, Ni, and Cu K-edges. The crystal and molecular structures of complexes were determined by the X-ray diffraction method. The nature of the bands of electronic absorption spectra of the complexes in CH2Cl2 solutions were interpreted using the results of quantum chemical calculations in the TD-DFT approximation. The antibacterial, protistocidal, and fungistatic activities of the H2L and its Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) complexes have been screened against Penicillium italicum, Colpoda steinii, Escherichia coli 078 and Staphylococcus aureus P-209, and the results were compared with the activities of furazolidone, toltrazuril, and benomyl.
