Abstract
New soluble phthalocyanines MPcX4 (M = 2H, Cu, Zn, Ni, Co, Fe) with four aryloxy substituents (X = p-methylphenoxy, 2,4-dimethylphenoxy) have been prepared and characterised by molecular weight measurements, elemental analyses, IR, electronic, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility measurements and thermal decomposition studies. The degree of association in solution has been measured by molecular weight determination using vapour pressure osmometry. The association in solution and its dependence on concentration, nature of solvent and cavity metal has also been investigated by UV-visible spectral studies and, in addition, by 1H NMR studies in the case of metal-free PCS. Susceptibility measurements showed a variation in the magnetic moments of the complexes with magnetic field strength, indicating the presence of intermolecular cooperative effects. The electrical conductivities of the solid MPcX4 complexes are generally higher than those for the corresponding unsubstituted Pcs. Referee I: K. K. M. Yousuf Referee II: M. Athar
