Abstract

ABSTRACT Three homologous series hydroxyl, acrylate and vinyl-ether terminated cyanobiphenyl compounds have been synthesised, termed as nOCB-OH, nOCB-AE and nOCB-VE (n = 2–12), respectively. The vinyl-ether terminated cyanobiphenyl compounds were synthesised by employing environmentally benign, highly efficient iridium complexes [Ir(cod)Cl]2 catalyser. The chemical structures and liquid crystalline properties of these compounds were characterised by nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR and 13C NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarised optical microscopy (POM). Furthermore, the structure-properties relationships were systematically investigated with the aid of molecular modelling at the B3LYP/6-31G* level of theory.
