Abstract

The synthesis, characterisation, thermogravimetric and antioxidant activity studies of Schiff bases derived from 4-phenyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,6-diamine and 3-hydroxy salicylaldehyde (H2L1) and 4-hydroxy salicylaldehyde (H2L2) together with their copper(II) complexes are reported. The Schiff bases and the metal complexes were characterised by elemental analyses (CHN), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy. Additionally, 1H- and 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance spectra were recorded for the Schiff bases, while thermogravimetric analysis was recorded for the complexes. Agents linked to the metal centre via deprotonated phenolate oxygen and azomethine nitrogen atoms in a 1:1 ligand-to-metal ratio. The antioxidant activities of the Schiff bases and complexes were examined using the 1,1-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl radical scavenging method and ferric reducing ability power. The results showed that the Schiff bases exhibited higher radical scavenging ability than the complexes.
