Abstract

New families of barium-free mercury-based oxide superconductors were synthesized in the (Hg, W) (Sr, La) n+1 Cu n O z ( n = 1, 2) system. The 1201 type cuprates ( n = 1) were stabilized by partial substitution of W on the Hg site and of La on the Sr site. The sample of (Hg 0.8W 0.2)(Sr 1.4La 0.6)Cu 2O z revealed a superconducting transition at 37 K. The 1212 type cuprates ( n = 2) were also synthesized. It is found that the formation of 1212 phase is sensitive to the ratio of Sr to La. Resistance measurement showed that (Hg 0.8W 0.2)Sr 2(Sr 0.45La 0.55)Cu 2O z is superconducting with a T c of 91 K.
