Abstract

The mixed bridged diene-rhodium(I) complex ([cod)Rh(μ-Cl)(μ-OAc)Rh(cod)] ( 1) has been prepared by the reaction of equivalent quantities of [(cod)RhCl] 2 and potassium or sodium acetate at reflux in methanol. 1 exhibits an Rh…Rh distance of 3.161(1) Å. Reaction of 1 with N 6, N 6-dimethyladenine (DmadH) yields [(cod)Rh(DmadH)Cl] ( 2), and [(cod)Rh(μ-Dmad)] 2 ( 3), which show N3 and N3,N9 metal binding, respectively. In contrast, reaction of 1 with 8-aza-9-methyladenine (Maad) gives only one product, dimeric [(cod)Rh(μ-MaadH −1)Rh(cod)Cl] 2 ( 4) in which the nucleobase is tridentate with N1, N6 and N7 as rhodium binding sites. The structures of 1, 2 and 4 have been established by X-ray structural analysis. The rhodium atom in 4 which is bonded to N1 is displaced by 1.08 Å from the plane of the pertinent nucleobase.
