Abstract
Crystalline europium carbonate was synthesized by using ammonium bicarbonate as precipitant. The X-ray diffraction data were indexed in the monoclinic system with cell parameters a = 11.983 A ̊ , b = 9.300 A ̊ , c = 8.429 A ̊ and β = 107.643°. The structure is closely related to those of tengerite type rare earth carbonates in the literature. The IR data for europium carbonate show the presence of two different carbonate groups. In the process of thermal decomposition of europium carbonate to oxide, intermediate Eu 2O 3 · CO 2 phase was detected.
