Abstract

The preparation of [Zn{SCH 2CH 2N(CH 3) 2} 2] by electrochemical oxidation of zinc and simultaneous reduction of 2-(dimethylamino)ethanethiol disulphide in an acetonitrile solution containing triethylamine is described. The compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P2 12 12 1 with a = 22.010(5), b = 11.313(3) and c = 10.170(3) Å. The structure consists of two crystallographically independent neutral monomeric units, which are optical isomers. Each zinc atom is bonded to two nitrogen and two sulphur atoms yielding a distorted tetrahedral coordination geometry. The chelating behaviour of the ligand is also evidenced in the IR and 1H and 13C NMR spectra.
