Abstract

The new perovskites CaLn 2ZnTi 2O 9 (Ln=La, Pr, Nd, Eu) have been synthesized in polycrystalline form by a conventional solid-state reactions process at 1300 °C in air atmosphere. The structure refinement of the four samples, by Rietveld analysis using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), shows that the cationic distribution over the A- and B-sites of the perovskite structure can be illustrated by the crystallographic formula (Ca 1/3Ln 2/3) A(Zn 1/3Ti 2/3) BO 3. All phases were described as orthorhombic perovskites with a GdFeO 3-type structure, Pbnm space group, in which A (Ca(Ln)) and B (Zn(Ti)) cations are disordered at random. Magnetic susceptibility measurements of the selected (Ca 1/3Pr 2/3) A(Zn 1/3Ti 2/3) BO 3 phase are consistent with the presence of Pr 3+ ions in this compound.
