Abstract

A novel cobalt complex, (L1)2Co2(hfac)4, (1), where L1 is (2E, 5E)-2, 5-bis(pyridin-3-ylmethylene)cyclopentan-1-one, has been synthesized and characterized by infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal of 1 is monoclinic, sp. gr. P21/c with the unit cell parameters a = 8.9700(3), b = 10.9323(4), c = 31.5197(11) A, and β = 102.470(3)°, Z = 2, R1 = 0.0866, and wR2 = 0.2528 (I > 2σ). The Co2+ ion has a distorted tetrahedral environment with four O atoms from two hfac ligands and two N atoms from two L1 ligands. The solid state of 1 consists of numerous hydrogen bonds, which are propagating the molecules to form a 3D network.
