Abstract

AbstractSeveral new amide—imide polymers of good thermal stability have been synthesized by the reaction in solution of diacid chlorides with diamines containing cyclic imide linkages. Since these polymers incorporate preformed imide groups, they are not subject to some of the problems encountered in the preparation of polyimides by cyclizing polyamic acids. Their solutions in polar solvents such as dimethylacetamide are stable and will tolerate considerable proportions of hydrocarbon thinners without precipitation. Thick films can be cast from the solutions without degradation. A high‐temperature cure is not needed to produce tough, flexible films. The powdered polymers can be molded readily.
