Abstract

We have synthesized four series of compounds having a general formula of C 6 H 13 (CH 3 ) * CHOO#75#75#75CH 2 CH 2#75 #75#75#75#75#75OC n H 2n+1 (I: Y=COOO; II: Y=OOC) and C 6 H 13 (CH 3 ) * CHOO#75#75#75#75#75CH 2 CH 2#75 #75#75#75OC n H 2n+1 (III: Y=OOC; IV: Y=COO), and found that they form chiral smectic C phases exhibiting ferroelectric properties. Their melting points are relatively low in comparison with other known liquid crystalline compounds comprizing three-ring systems. The magnitude of spontaneous polarization is as high as 40-90 nc/cm 2 . The influence of molecular structure, i.e., the position of the ester group in the bonding sequence as well as the influence of the alkyl side chain length, on the thermal stabilities of the liquid crystals are discussed
