Abstract

Soluble and high molecular weight polyaniline is prepared by chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline. The oxidant/aniline molar ratio influences the solubility of the resulting undoped polymer. On the other hand, the molecular weight is affected by the polymerization temperature. The oxidized undoped polyaniline powder prepared under the oxidant/aniline equimolar ratio and low temperature (−5 to −3 °C) condition shows high solubility in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone and a high molecular weight. An extremely tough film is prepared by the casting method. Moreover, the oxidized undoped powder is converted into the reduced form by the reduction treatment using phenylhydrazine. A reduced polyaniline solution containing the specific dopant is stable and a polyaniline (0.05 μ m) coated polyester film is prepared by coating a 1wt.% solution. The resulting film has a low surface resistance and can be applied to an antistatic coating of the 4MB-capacity barium ferrite floppy disk.
