Abstract

A substantial enhancement in the nonlinear optical properties of three-dimensional NLO chromophores in which three or four 4′-dibutylaminoazobenzenyl moieties are connected through a central phosphonium ion (right) is observed relative to the corresponding one-dimensional compound. This contrasts with the linear optical properties, which behave additively.
