Abstract

The purpose of the study was to fabricate the dental amalgam to improve its mechanical properties for dental field. Silver amalgam (γ1-phase) and silver-tin amalgam (γ-phase) was synthesized by using chemical reduction method. The structural analysis of the prepared dental amalgam was characterized by XRD, SEM and EDX. Tensile and hardness test were performed using UTM. XRD confirmed the cubic (bcc) structure of Ag- Hg and orthorhombic structure of Ag-Sn-Hg. SEM analysis demonstrated the morphology of pure silver amalgam (γ1-phase) and silver tin amalgam (γ-phase). The EDX analysis revealed the chemical composition of prepared amalgam Ag, Sn and Hg. Tensile and hardness test were performed to assess the mechanical characteristics of prepared dental amalgam. Tensile and hardness tests showed that mechanical properties were enhanced by adding the polyethylene glycol in the γ-phase and γ1-phase amalgam for current application of dental industry.
