Abstract
Transition metal solids have been exposed to fluorine, chlorine trifluoride and/or oxygen at temperatures up to 800 °C, and the volatile reaction products analyzed by mass spectrometry. Reported here are the results of the reactions of the metals (sometimes partially oxidized) technetium, rhenium, tantalum and tungsten. The following vapor species have been identified: TcF 5, TcO 3F, TcOF 4, TcO 2F 3, TcO 3Cl, TcOCl 3, TcO 2Cl x ( x = 2 or 3), TcOF 2Cl, TcOFCl 2, ReF 6, ReO 3F, ReO 2F 3, ReOF 4, WF 6, WO 2F 2, WOF 4, WO 2Cl 2, WF 5Cl, TaF 5, TaOF 3, TaOCl 3 and TaF xCl 5− x ( x = 1–4). The conditions under which these species were formed and their relevance to conventional condensed phase chemistry are discussed.
