Abstract

Two series were synthesized containing a 5H-thiazolo[3,4-b][1, 3, 4]thiadiazole unit with a Schiff base and an azo linkage. Polarized optical microscope (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to examine the mesomorphic behavior. Enantiotropic nematic phases were present in compounds with alkoxy terminal groups of n = 1–4 methylene units for both series. While enantiotropic smectic A (SmA) is also present in molecules with n = 6–8 carbon atoms in addition to nematic phases for a series of azo linkage. The molecules in the Schiff base linkage series with n = 6–8 exhibited pure smectogenic liquid crystalline behavior.
