Abstract

A three-component «one-pot» synthesis utilizing pyridine, malononitrile (or methyl cyanoacetate), and derivatives of α-iodonicotinonitrile was carried out under modified Zincke reaction conditions. The resulting aza-merocyanines in solution are capable of reversible fluorophore generation with λmaxem is about 620 nm in the presence of weak bases. The absorption-fluorescence spectra of the obtained compounds were characterized, and quantum yields for their fluorescent forms were determined.
