Abstract

Bio-active glass-ceramics of CaO−Al2O3−SiO2 (CAS) system have been synthesized using nano-alumina and compared with the standard alumina based CAS glass system. The glass-ceramics samples were characterized by DTA, XRD, SEM-EDS, and FTIR. The crystallization behaviour and microstructure was determined for all the glass batches. With addition of nano alumina, the glass transition temperature (Tg) first decreases and then increases while the crystallization peak temperature (Tp) increases and activation energy (E), Avrami parameter (n) are independent. Avrami parameter values for all the glass batches are n≅ 3, it indicates two-dimensional crystal formation. Fluorapatite (FA) was the main crystalline phase as indicated from the XRD analysis.
