Abstract
Formation of the title compounds 3-(p-phenylphenyl)-3‑hydroxy-N-isopropyl-4,4-dimethylazetidin-2-one, C20H23NO2 (2d), and 3-phenyl-3‑hydroxy-N-isopropyl-4,4-dimethylazetidin-2-one, C14H19NO2 (2a), was achieved by photoreaction of N,N-diisopropyl(p-phenylphenyl)glyoxylamide 1d and N,N-diisopropylphenylglyoxylamide 1a, respectively, in solution and confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 2d and 2a belong to the orthorhombic and monoclinic systems, space groups Pna21 and P21/c, respectively.
