Abstract

The crystallization and crystal growth of zeolite TPA-ZSM-5 when ammonium cation is used instead of alkali metal cations are reported. ZSM-5 was the only crystalline product obtained in this system. Activation energies for nucleation and crystallization were determined to be 9.6 and 15.9 kcal gmol −1, respectively. Using aqueous colloidal silica sol and crystals of tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr) as reagents resulted in relatively large (to 35 μm) euhedral single crystals, while the system containing microfine precipitated silica and solution of tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) produced spherulitic aggregates of very small crystals.
