Abstract

2-(1',3'-dioxolan-4'-yl) benzimidazole corrosion inhibitor was synthesized using glycerol, by-product of waste oil hydrolysis, paraformaldehyde and o-phenylenediamine as the main raw materials. The product was characterised by IR, UV and NMR spectroscopy. The corrosion inhibition effect of corrosion inhibitor on Q235 carbon steel in dilute hydrochloric acid was evaluated by static weight loss method, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The morphology of the corrosion surface of the specimen was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Experimental results showed that the corrosion inhibitor had good corrosion inhibition effect on carbon steel in 5%HCl solution, and that the corrosion inhibition rate of Q235 carbon steel increased as the concentration of the corrosion inhibitor increased. The adsorption was of a mixed physical and chemical nature, wherein the corrosion inhibitor was adsorbed on the surface of carbon steel and followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption process was spontaneous in nature.
