Abstract

The present work involves preparation of ZrO2 and graphene particle reinforced Al 6061 metal matrix composite (Al6061-1 wt% ZrO2-1 wt% graphene). The composite is processed using stir casting method. Microstructural characterization is carried out using Image analyzer and confirms the presence of zirconium and graphene particles. A uniform distribution of reinforcement is observed throughout the matrix. The morphology of incorporated particles is discussed and particle sizes are evaluated using metallurgical microscope. Tensile tests are carried out to study the effect of reinforcement in the matrix and the results are reported. It is observed that the load at the yield point is greater than 9.9 KN. During fracture, the bond between the reinforcement and the matrix detaches and subsequently leads to the formation of dimples.
