Abstract

Mixed Ni-TiN ultrafine particles (UFPs) were synthesized by an arc melting of Ni and Ti, separately, in an N2-H2-Ar atmosphere, and mixing the produced Ni and TiN UFPs in the gas phase. Homogeneous distribution of spherical Ni UFPs and cubical TIN UFPs were confirmed by TEM photographs. Composite Ni-TIN UFPs were synthesized by an arc melting Ni-Ti alloy in an N2-H2-Ar atmosphere. The composite Ni-TiN UFPs were in the shape of the dumbbell which consisted of Ni UFPs on both sides. Sintering and gas desorption characteristics of the mixed and the composite Ni-TiN UFPs were examined by means of BET specific surface area measurements, dilatometric measurements, and temperature programmed desorption measurements. The results were discussed by comparison of those of the Ni or the TiN UFPs.
