Abstract

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with direct covalent bonding to nitro groups are reported. SWNTs covalently functionalized with nitro groups are prepared by chemical transformation of the carboxylic acid groups introduced on the wall of carbon nanotubes. Nitro-functionalized SWNTs have potential applications in energetic materials. The nitrated SWNTs are characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
