Abstract

Monochlorotetrakis(4-t.butylphenoxo)tantalum(V), TaCl(OC 6H 4Bu t-4) 4 ( I), has been synthesized by reacting TaCl 5 and 4-t.butylphenol (4-BU tC 6H 4OH) in a 1:4 molar ratio in benzene under reflux and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance and molecular weight determination, IR, NMR and mass spectral studies. Reactions of I with ca equimolar amounts of some aliphatic amines yield 1 : 1 addition compounds, whilst with strong chloride ion acceptors it behaves as a chloride ion donor thus indicating the formation of ionic compounds of the type [Ta(OC 6H 4Bu t-4) 4] +[MCl − 4].
