Abstract

The present work reports a method for preparing electrically conductive titanium suboxides materials of Magneli phases with relatively low temperature treatment and short reaction time scale. We successfully produced Ti4O7, Ti5O9 and Ti6O11 by reducing TiO2 in an instantaneously decomposed ammonia atmosphere at high temperature. The influences of reduction temperature and time to the reduced phases were revealed. Ti4O7 was obtained by annealing rutile TiO2 in the reductive atmosphere at 1323K for 3h. The morphology of the materials was characterized by a scanning electron microscope, and the SEM images clearly show the spherical and porous particles of the reduced sample. However, the BET surface area of the produced Ti4O7 material is 1.99m2·g−1, which is too low for application in electrocatalysis.
