Abstract

The kinetic features of the synthesis of EU-1 zeolites with SiO 2/Al 2O 3 ratios up to 525 using a mixture of benzyl dimethylamine and benzyl chloride as templates is reported. In the isomerization of m-xylene, both ZSM-5 and EU-1 exhibit similar para selectivities. However, much larger quantities of transalkylation products (toluene and trimethylbenzenes) are formed over EU-1. It is suggested that this is a consequence of the presence of 10-membered pore openings as well as large side cavities in EU-1. The former leads to high para-selectivity, whereas transalkylation reactions can occur in the latter.
