Abstract

A framework of Cd(II), {[Cd2(toua)(4,4′-bpy)](NO3)2·3H2O}n (1) is constructed using a heteroatom based linker 3,6,9-trioxaundecanedioic acid (H2toua) and a nitrogen based ligand, 4,4′-bipyridine (4,4′-bpy). Compound 1 was characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR and UV-Visible spectroscopy. The thermal stability of 1 was determined using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Spectroscopic studies revealed the presence of nitrate as an anion that makes compound 1 suitable for anion interaction study. This study was performed using different sodium salts such as chloride, oxalate, hydroxide, acetate, bromate, sulphate, thiosulfate, carbonate and bicarbonate respectively and it was found that among all these anions, the compound exhibit anion-π interactions selectively with acetate, sulphate, and thiosulfate. Furthermore, CdO nanoparticles with hexagonal morphology was obtained upon direct calcination of compound 1 at 700 °C. These as-synthesized CdO nanoparticles showed selective behavior towards a cationic dye (methylene blue) over an anionic dye (Eosin yellow).
