Abstract

In this study, a novel up-converted and persistent luminescent α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) composite was successfully prepared by incorporating Zn3Ga2SnO8:Cr3+, Yb3+, Er3+ (ZGSO:CYE) phosphor at low temperature followed by mixing and hydration processes. The obtained multi-functional composite was well combined and had the dual-mode luminescence feature. It could emit a long-lasting persistent luminescence at 696 nm (for more than 60 min) post-excitation at 274 nm, and also an up-converted luminescence under a 980 nm laser. Furthermore, the composite is used to simulate imaging of tissues of ~1 cm thickness. This study explains a successful method to fabricate multifunctional bone cement composites with intense dual-mode luminescence for imaging, sensing, and other complex applications of biological therapy.
