Abstract

Nanosize 3 mol.-% yttria tetragonal zirconia (3Y-TZP) powder was synthesised by coprecipitation method, both in presence and absence of hydroxypropyl cellulose. Thermal decomposition behaviour was studied by differential thermal analysis–thermogravimetry methods. Based on the particle characterisation by different techniques and sintering studies, it has been found that presence of hydroxypropyl cellulose during precipitation inhibited agglomeration and yielded well dispersed particles with narrow size distribution in the final powder. Excellent sinter activity of the calcined powder has been demonstrated.
