Abstract

Abstract Complexes of La (III), Pr (III), Nd (III), Sm (III), Eu (III), Gd (III), Tb (III), Dy (III) and Y (III) with 1-(2′ -hydroxybenzy 1) -2-(2′ -hydroxyphenyl)benzimidazole have been prepared and characterised on the basis of elemental analysis, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility, and electronic and infrared spectral data. The spectral parameters, β, b1/2, δ(%) and n have been calculated from the solid state electronic spectra of Pr (III), Nd (III) and Sm (III) complexes, which suggest a weak covalent metal-ligand bond formation. Infrared spectra reveal that coordination occurs through one of the phenolic oxygen atoms and N-3 atom of the ligand. The studies indicate an eight coordinated structure for the complexes.
