Abstract

Monomers and polymers containing arylmethylene-1,3-indandione and arylmethylene-1,3-bisdicyanovinylindane moieties were synthesized. The number average molecular weights of the polymers were found to be of 6030 and 7230 and polydispersity indices of 3.76 and 3.07, respectively. Thermal, optical, photophysical, photoelectrical and electrochemical properties of the synthesized compounds were studied. Their 5 % weight loss temperatures ranged from 261 to 300 °C. Both the monomers and the polymers were found capable to form glasses with glass transition temperatures of 43–104 °C. Cyclic voltammograms of the synthesized compounds showed one quasi-reversible oxidation couple and quasi-reversible reduction waves. The ionization potentials of the solid samples of the synthesized materials established by photoelectron spectrometry were found to be in the range of 5.25–5.41 eV.
