Abstract

Boron nitride (BN) nanotubes were fabricated by arc-melting LaB 6 and boron/FeO x powder compacts in nitrogen/argon gas atmosphere. The nanotubes were studied by high-resolution electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The diameters of the BN nanotubes are in the range of 10–100 nm. The present work indicates that La could be a good candidate as a catalyst to produce the BN fullerene-like materials by changing the ratio of LaB 6/B.
