Abstract

An indenoquinoline dione conjugate has been synthesized by a convenient and environmentally benign methodology using task specific ionic liquid [NMP]H2PO4 and the structure has been characterized by X-ray crystallography. UV–visible and fluorescence studies of 1 have been investigated in different solvents. pH dependent absorption and emission properties of this probe were also investigated. The fluorescence spectra of 1 were revealed a bathochromic shift and the fluorescence intensity was gradually increased along with the increase of pH value. Possible mechanism based on intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) for this fluorescent pH sensor has been proposed. Theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) have been done to understand the ICT in presence of acid and base of this particular sensor. The color change of this sensor could be directly detected by naked eyes which confirmed that it is also a promising candidate for colorimetric pH sensor.
