Abstract

Synthesis and unique complexation behaviour of 4-dimethylaminopyridyltellurium compound (two Te-atoms bonded individually to C-2 and C-6 on a single pyridine ring) is presented. BF3-directed lithiation method is employed for the synthesis of ligand while its copper complex is synthesized using a simple procedure at ambient laboratory conditions. The synthesized tellurium-assisted copper complex has unusual coordination number of nine. Single crystal X-ray crystallographic, X-ray diffraction, FT-IR and UV–Visible spectroscopic techniques were used to characterize ligand and its copper complex. The antioxidant abilities of metal complexes and ligands compared to determine the impact of the introduction of metal centres on the antioxidant behaviour of the pyridyltellurides. The utility of the pyridyltellurides copper complex as a precursor of copper telluride nanomaterials was also investigated.
