Abstract

Polyelectrolytes with quaternary nitrogen atoms in the main chain, known as ionenes, have an important pharmacological property -they are heparin antagonists. Studies have shown that ionenes effectively and irreversibly neutralize the anticoagulant action of heparin and have less pronounced side effects than the protamine salts used in medicine [2, 6]. By changing the structural properties of ionenes it is possible to synthesize compounds which combine antiheparin activity with high selectivity towards this anticoagulant in a living organism [3, 4].
