Abstract

Trifluoromethylation of 9-iodoanthracene with sodium trifluoroacetate and copper(I) iodide in dipolar aprotic solvent gives 9-trifluoromethylanthracene (TFMA). UV irradiation of TFMA through Pyrex leads to the formation of an anti-[4 + 4]dimer whose structure was determined by 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy, and confirmed by X-ray crystallography.
