Abstract

Two novel metal–organic compounds [Zn(mtp)(pdc)]n (1) and [Cd(mtp)(bdc)·2H2O]n (2) [mtp = 2-(2-methoxy-phenyl)-1H-1,3,7,8-tetraaza-cyclopenta[l]phenanthrene, pdc = 5-methyl-2H-pyridine-1,3-dicarboxylic acid, bdc = terephthalic acid] have been synthesized by hydrothermal reactions and characterized by elemental analysis, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, infrared spectrum and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that 1 exhibits one-dimensional (1D) chain structure, and 2 shows 2D layer architecture. TG analysis shows clear courses of weight loss, which correspond to the decomposition of different ligands. We also discussed the luminescent properties for the ligands and compounds 1–2. Compounds 1 and 2 may be good candidate for potential photoluminescence materials, because it is highly thermally stable and insoluble in water and common organic solvents.
