Abstract

Polysulfone (PSf) was functionalized with three different metal-ion chelating ligands: 8-hydroxyquinoline, 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol, and 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol. These chelating group-immobilized polysulfone polymers were evaluated for the chelation of trace metals from seawater samples. The chelating characteristics of PSf modified with 8-hydroxyquinoline were superior to the others. In addition to the powder form, microfiltration membranes were cast, modified and evaluated for heavy metal chelation.
