Abstract

Two new barium zinc selenite and tellurite, namely, BaZn(SeO 3) 2 and BaZn(TeO 3)Cl 2, have been synthesized by the solid state reaction. The structure of BaZn(SeO 3) 2 features double chains of [Zn(SeO 3) 2] 2− anions composed of four- and eight-member rings which are alternatively along a-axis. The double chains of [Zn 2(TeO 3) 2Cl 3] 3− anions in BaZn(TeO 3)Cl 2 are formed by Zn 3Te 3 rings in which each tellurite group connects with three ZnO 3Cl tetrahedra. BaZn(SeO 3) 2 and BaZn(TeO 3)Cl 2 are wide bandgap semiconductors based on optical diffuse reflectance spectrum measurements.
