Abstract

Trialkyltin(IV) bis(fluorosulfonyl)imides, R 3SnN(SO 2F) 2 [R=Me, Et, Pr n and Bu n], have been prepared by metathesis of the corresponding chlorides with the silver bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide-benzene complex in dichloromethane. The compounds are viscous oily liquids that have been characterized by their elemental analyses, IR, 1H, 13C, 19F and 119Sn NMR spectra, and mass spectrometry. Low 119Sn chemical shifts suggest an appreciable cationic character of the organotin(IV) moiety in these compounds. Trimethyltin(IV) bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide forms coordination complexes with pyridine and dimethylsulfoxide which are ionic in nature. 119Sn Mössbauer data of the pyridine complex reveals trans-TBP geometry around tin in [Me 3SnPy 2] +[N(SO 2F) 2] −.
