Abstract

Several coordination complexes of mercury(II) have been synthesized by the reaction of mercury(II) salts with 2-(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyridine (L1) and its corresponding oxide (L2). The synthesized complexes were fully characterized by elemental analysis and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy techniques. The crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Different geometries were observed around the metal center, including distorted trigonal–pyramidal (1,3), distorted tetrahedral (2) and distorted octahedral (4,5), with the degree of distortion depending on the steric effects and the chelating capability of 2-(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyridine and its oxide.
