Abstract

New iodophenyl hexafluoroarsenates of group 15 elements of the type [Ph 3EI] +[AsF 6] - (Ph = μ 1-C 6H 5; E=P, As, Sb, Bi) have been prepares in THF at low temperature by the reaction with AgAsF6. All the compounds have been characterized by 1H NMR, IR and Raman spectroscopy. Direct evidence for an E-I bond has been found in the Raman spectra for all complexes. The phosphorus species [Ph 3PI] +[AsF 6] - as well as the intermediate [Ph 3PI] +I - and in addition [Ph 3PI] +Cl - and [Ph 3PCl] +Cl - have been characterized by solution 31P-NMR-spectroscopy. The bacterial activity of [Ph 3PCl] +[AsF 6] - has been studied and the complex was found to inhibit bacterial growth more so than triphenyl bismuth.
