Abstract

The study of BaTe 2O 6-M INbO 3 and BaTe 2O 6-M II(NbO 3) 2 allowed the synthesis of the new compounds M IBaNbTe 2O 9 with M I ≡ Li, Na, K, Rb, Ag and M 0.5 IIBaNbTe 2O 9 with M II ≡ Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb. These compounds contain mixed valent tellurium (IV and VI). All these compounds are isostructural: orthorhombic, space group P2 12 12 1, Z = 4. The electrical, optical and magnetic properties of Cu 0.5BaNbTe 2O 9 compound have been studied. Results demonstrate the existence of independent Cu 2+ ions, most of which are placed on axial symmetry sites which result from a deformation by elongation, which is probably caused by a Jahn-Teller effect.
