Abstract

The criteria for selection of mechanism type are discussed from the viewpoint of Fourier expressions for the input-vs-output equation of a mechanism. Based on this discussion it is recommended that the synthesis procedure for mechanism design begin with the process of type synthesis in order to avoid failure of the dimensional synthesis procedure later in the design process. Once the type synthesis phase of the design process is complete, the dimensional synthesis phase can be started. This paper presents a numerical procedure for the dimensional synthesis of the slider crank inversion using the values of certain Fourier coefficients of the output function. Using this new approach, an equation is found for direct calculation of the mechanism parameter λ using the quotient of two Fourier coefficients A 1/A 0 obtained from a comparison of the Fourier coefficients of the desired output function and the actual output function for the mechanism. The angular offset between the reference position of the desired output function and the reference position of the actual output function is then calculated.
