Abstract

To integrate natural language medical text into information retrieval systems, a Medical Text Analysis System (MediTAS) has been under development at Goettingen for some time. MediTAS is intended to support syntactical, semantical and pragmatic analyses. A syntax analysis of about 8,800 unique sentences (from the summary sections of cytopathological findings reports) has been performed, yielding correct analyses for 94 % of the sentences. The syntactical analysis is based upon the newly developed Left-Associative Grammar and a corresponding parser for German, which have been extended considerably. The report illustrates the LAG-approach and some of our modifications.
