Abstract
Considerations about the possible relations between phase cooperation inducing synergistic effects and site isolation providing for selectivity in mild oxidation of hydrocarbons are proposed. Synergistic effects between several phases arise because of the coherence of their interfaces due to a low mismatch between their structural patterns. As outlined in the paper, the enhanced reactivity is encountered not only in catalytic reactions but also in non-catalytic transformations like allotropic transitions, sublimation, etc. The situations providing for site isolation are given: defective structures, doping and supporting effects on bulk and monolayers, encapsulation of active sites in zeolites are reviewed.
